Refraction Remix was created in response to educator feedback that Refraction 2 was too difficult spatially. In particular, many players were failing to complete levels not because of their fractions understanding but because the spatial puzzle of where each piece should go was too difficult. You can play Refraction Remix at http://play.centerforgamescience.org/refraction_remix/cgs/.
Gameplay Changes
Refraction Remix gave players new tools to work through the spatial difficulty of levels in Refraction Remix through three core gameplay changes:
1. Rotation and Cycling of pieces
2. Practically Infinite bank of pieces (limited to 20, most levels need 6 pieces at most)
3. Partial Completion
New Features
Refraction Remix also featured:
1. Redesigned level progression
2. Redesigned tutorials and on-boarding experience
3. Hinting system
4. Infinite lasers (simplified combiner mechanics)
My Contributions
In my role as the Lead Designer for Refraction Remix I worked on design changes to gameplay, levels, tutorials, UI/UX, and the new hinting system of the game.
